Lunch that changes with what the market brings

Sparkybeta's weekday lunch menu is written each morning based on seasonal produce from Port Elizabeth's Victoria Park Market — a short, honest list served from 11:30 until it runs out.

Why the menu is different every day

Writing the lunch menu around whatever is freshest that morning is more work than running a fixed card — but it keeps the food honest. We keep five core building blocks in the kitchen at all times: a cooked grain, a legume preparation, a roasted vegetable, a fresh green and a house dressing. The combination changes daily. On a Monday in autumn you might find a warm freekeh bowl with roasted butternut, tahini-dressed rocket and crisp chickpeas. By Wednesday the grain might be barley, the vegetable might be charred leeks. We print a short menu on the chalkboard by 11:00 and post it on our Instagram story for anyone planning ahead.

What to expect from the lunch counter

The ingredients rotate, but these four formats appear on our menu most weeks.

  • Seasonal grain bowl

A warm or room-temperature base of freekeh, barley or brown rice topped with two or three vegetables, a protein element and a house-made dressing. R85 — the most complete lunch on the menu.

  • Open sourdough sandwich

A thick slice of our country loaf topped with a rotating combination — this week might be smashed avocado, dukkah and a soft-boiled egg; next week might be roasted pepper hummus and pickled cucumber. R65.

  • Daily soup

A single soup option made fresh each morning — typically a blended vegetable or a broth-based pulse soup depending on the season. Served with a seeded rye roll. R55, available from 11:30.

  • Small plates to share

Two or three smaller items — marinated olives, a roasted vegetable salad, a warm dip with bread — available alongside the main menu for tables that want to spread things out. From R35.

A note on what lunch at Sparkybeta is not

The lunch menu is deliberately short — usually four items, sometimes five. We do not run a full kitchen: there is no deep fryer, no grill and no made-to-order burger or steak. All food is prepared in a small prep kitchen by one person, which means everything is finished before service begins and the menu closes when the last portion sells. We cannot accommodate large groups without advance notice, and we do not offer table service — you order at the counter and we bring the food to you. For group bookings of six or more, please contact us at least 48 hours ahead so we can prepare accordingly.

“I work two blocks from Sparkybeta and I have eaten lunch there at least twice a week since they introduced the weekday menu. The grain bowls genuinely keep me full until evening, the food is never boring and I appreciate that the menu tells you honestly when something is sold out rather than keeping you guessing. Proper neighbourhood food.”
